For those who were dreaming to have a lazy vacation at the swimming pool, I have some disappointing news!
There is an awful lot to see and do in Bolsena and surroundings. On the square of the village in Bolsena you will find the tourist office with a lot of information.
But to make it easy for you, I allready created a list with the most beautiful things to see.
Just outside the village of Bolsena, direction Orvieto, you will find some excavations (scavi) and a castle. On the other side of Bolsena you find the Basilica di S.Cristina e Santuario del Miracolo Eucaristico. At the back of the Basilica are the catacombs and many frescoes.
Don’t forget to take a walk in the old centre of Bolsena by the narrow alleys and stairways or to rent a pedalo or motor boat, or make a tour around the lake with the big boat.
You can also make a very nice walk along the Via Francigena. This is an old pilgrims route that runs from Canterbury to Rome, across Italy, France and Switzerland. You’ll find this Via Francigena 1 km uphill from the house.
Outside Bolsena there are several sights.
Besides Orvieto, Viterbo and the big cities Rome, Siena, Firenze, Perugia and Assisi, there are still many small villages that are very worthwhile to pay a visit.
I created a small list of some villages and fun routes.
Take direction Gradoli and drive to the villages of Sovana, Sorano and Pitigliano. Around these villages you will find the Vie Cave (hollow roads). These Vie Cave are artificial cuts into the tufa rock with depths from one meter to over 10 meters. This is an impressive road network linking an Etruscan necropolis. Around Sovana, the Vie Cave wind around and towards the archaeological area of that town, then reconnecting with those from Sorano and Pitigliano. According to some villagers, these hollow roads were the shortest possible routes through the hills, according to the others these Vie Cave were holy roads where the Etruscans performed magical rites.
But don’t forget also to visit those 3 magnificent villages themselves!
From there you can go further on to the Terme di Saturnia. Here you can have a bathe in the hot sulphurous spring water. There a paying (with shower) and free baths. The sulphur baths are very good for the skin and it is also fine to do when the weather is bad (the water has a temperature of approximately 38°)
Cività di Bagnoregio “la città che muore” the city that dies.
You find this beautiful village if you drive to Bagnoregio in the direction of Orvieto. Just like Orvieto, Sorano and Pitigliano, Cività di Bagnoregio is built on a tufa rock. It is only accessible on foot across a long high bridge. The name “La città che muore” because this city is slowly crumbling.
Tarquinia:
The Etruscan necropolises, with some 6.000 tombs, 200 of which include well-preserved wall paintings. Since 2004 Etruscan Tarquinia (along with those of Cerveteri; further to Rome) is part of the World Heritage list of Unesco.
Ostia Antica: direction Fiumicino (airport) and then Ostia and Ostia Antica.
Ostia was in Roman times the port of Rome. The city is largely preserved and excavated and is one of the best preserved Roman cities in Italy.
If you are planning to spend a day at the “Mare Tirreno”, then you certainly have to go to the peninsula Orbetello. At the Porto S.Stefano is allways a nice and cosy hustle.
Also a ride along the lake with the small villages Capodimonte, Gradoli, Marta and Montefiascone is very nice.
Finally, you can still jump in the car and just driving around and enjoy the beautiful scenery, but also stop and visit the different villages you pass on your way. In each village you will find wonderful authentic squares, alleys, churches, etc. Each village has its hidden treasures! After all those years I come here, I still keep on discovering new wonderful places and things.
Watch out!
In Italy everything closes between 1 and 4.30 pm. Even the churches! (finally the priest also has to eat his spaghetti) (and of course also do his siesta!)
If you are planning to visit the Vie Cave, Cività di Bagnoregio and the Therme you have to ask for the route! There are no signs! I have the impression the Italians want to keep away mass tourism, and they succeed wonderful. Everywhere it is very quiet.
Some tasty tips for the gourmets!
There are an awful lot of restaurants in Bolsena where you can eat delicious food.
These are my 2 favourite restaurants:
Il Pinzale, Via Cassia 115.9 km (at 2 km of distance from the house)
Very nice and fine Italian cuisine, reservations required (Italians come eat here from all over) Here you can also order pizza to take home so you only have to sit down at the big table on the terrace together with your family and friends and enjoy.
La Fornacella, Via Cassia 111 km, with a large fireplace where meat and fish are grilled.
Italian ice cream (gelato)
At the bar along the lake next to Trattoria del Moro, but also at the bar on the village square.
Fresh pasta
Don’t feel like cooking? You will find the most delicious fresh homemade pasta and ravioli in the side street of the main square towards the Basilica (third house on the right: pasta fresca). Just make a simple tomato sauce with a piece of frech baked baguette (ask at the bakery “pane con sale” salted bread) and a nice glass of wine…. Do I need to say more?

As you can see there is lots to do in Bolsena, and no time for boredom.

Wie dacht aan een luie vakantie aan het zwembad is eraan voor de moeite!
Er is ontzettend veel te zien en te beleven in Bolsena en omstreken. Op het dorpsplein in Bolsena vind je het VVV-kantoor met een schat aan informatie. In de voormiddag werkt daar iemand die Nederlands spreekt.
Om het jullie makkelijk te maken heb ik alvast een lijstje gemaakt met de mooiste bezienswaardigheden.
In Bolsena zelf vind je net buiten het dorp, richting Orvieto, enkele opgravingen (scavi) en een kasteel. Aan de andere kant van Bolsena vind je de Basilica di S.Cristina e Santuario del Miracolo Eucaristico. Achteraan de Basiliek vind je de catacomben en nog vele fresco’s.
Maak zeker ook een wandeling in het oude centrum van Bolsena door de vele steegjes en trappen om nadien te genieten van de lekkerste “gelato” van de streek op het dorpsplein (bar). En loop dan verder richting Bolsenameer om een pedalo of een motorbootje te huren om het meer af te varen, of vaar met de grote boot het meer rond.
Een leuke wandeling is langs de Via Francigena. Dit is een oude pelgrimsroute die loopt van Canterbury naar Rome, en onderweg Frankrijk, Zwitserland en Italië aandoet. Je hoeft natuurlijk niet de volledige route te doen maar een klein stukje kan wel. 1 km van het huis bergopwaarts ligt deze Via Francigena.
Buiten Bolsena zijn er nog verschillende bezienswaardigheden.
Naast Orvieto, Viterbo en de grote steden Rome, Siena, Firenze, Perugia en Assisi zijn er toch nog vele kleine dorpjes die zeer de moeite waard zijn voor een bezoekje.
Hieronder heb ik een kleine opsomming gemaakt van enkele dorpjes en leuke routes.
Neem richting Gradoli en rijd naar de dorpen Sovana, Sorano en Pitigliano. Rond deze dorpen vind je de Vie Cave (holle wegen). Deze Vie Cave zijn uitgehouwen in de voor deze streek kenmerkende tufsteen (tufo) en hebben een diepte variërend van 1 meter tot 10 meter. Het is een indrukwekkend gangenstelsel die de Etruskische necropoli linken. Rond Sovana lopen deze holle wegen richting de archeologische site van dit stadje en sluiten zo aan bij de holle wegen van Sorano en Pitigliano. Volgens sommige dorpeling waren deze wegen gewoon de kortst mogelijk routes door de heuvels, volgens de anderen waren deze Vie Cave heilige wegen waar de Etrusken magische riten uitvoerden.
Maar vergeet zeker ook niet de dorpen zelf te bezichtigen!
Van daaruit kan je eventueel verder doorrijden naar de Terme di Saturnia. Hier kan je baden in het warme zwavelhoudende bronwater.
Er zijn betalende (met douche) en gratis baden. De zwavelbaden zijn zeer goed voor de huid. Ook prima te doen bij slecht weer (het water is namelijk rond de 38°)
Via richting Orvieto rijd je naar Bagnoregio en zo door naar Cività di Bagnoregio “La città che muore” de stad die sterft. Net zoals Orvieto, Sorano en Pitigliano is Cività di Bagnoregio gebouwd op een tufstenenrots. Enkel te voet te bereiken via een lange hoge brug. De naam “La città che muore” omdat deze stad stilaan afbrokkelt.
Tarquinia: sinds 2004 maken de Etruskische necropolissen van Tarquinia (samen met die van Cerveteri; nog verder naar Rome toe) deel uit van de werelderfgoedlijst van Unesco.
Vele graftomben met prachtige en zeer goed bewaarde muurschilderingen.
Ostia Antica; richting Fiumicino (luchthaven) en dan Ostia en Ostia Antica.
Ostia was in de Romeinse tijd de havenplaats van Rome. De stad is grotendeels bewaard en opgegraven en is één van de best bewaarde Romeinse steden in Italië.
Als je een dagje “Mare Tirreno” plant, rijd dan zeker ook eens even naar het schiereiland Orbetello. Aan de Porto S. Stefano heerst steeds een gezellige drukte.
Ook een ritje langs het meer is de moeite met de nodige haltes in Capodimonte, Marta, Gradoli en Montefiascone.
Tenslotte kan je ook nog in de wagen springen en gewoon wat rondrijden, van het prachtige landschap genieten, maar ook halt houden bij de verschillende dorpjes die je op je weg tegenkomt. In elk dorpje vind je wel prachtige authentieke pleintjes, steegjes, kerkjes, enz. Elk dorpje heeft zo zijn verborgen pareltjes!
Telkens ik naar Bolsena kom rijd ik wat rond naar verschillende dorpjes en geloof me, na al die jaren sta ik nog vaak versteld van de nog vele verborgen schatten.
Let op!
In Italië sluit alles tussen 13 en 16.30h. Zelfs de kerken! (de pastoor moet tenslotte ook zijn spaghetti eten) (en natuurlijk ook zijn siësta nemen achteraf!)
Als je de vie cave, de terme of Cività di Bagnoregio gaat bezichtigen, vraag de weg! Bijna nergens staan borden. Ik heb de indruk dat de Italianen de grote hoop toeristen willen weghouden en daar slagen ze wonderwel in. Overal is het redelijk rustig tot zeer rustig.
Nog enkele lekkere tips!
Restaurantjes: er zijn ontzettend veel restaurantjes in Bolsena waar men lekker kan eten. Ik vernoem even de 2 restaurants die mijn voorkeur genieten:
il Pinzale, Via Cassia km 115,9 (op maar 2 km van het huis)
Ontzettend lekkere en fijne Italiaanse keuken, reserveren noodzakelijk (Italianen komen naar hier van heinde en ver)
Hier kan je ook pizza’s bestellen om mee te nemen naar huis zodat je enkel nog gezellig aan de grote tafel op het terras hoeft aan te schuiven samen met familie en vrienden.
La Fornacella: Via Cassia km 111
Grote open haard waarop vlees en vis gegrild worden.
Italiaanse ijsjes (gelato)
Ijsjes koopt men aan het meer in de bar naast Trattoria Del Moro maar ook op het dorpsplein in de bar ofwel zijstraat rechts richting Basiliek.
Verse pasta
Geen zin om te koken? De lekkerste verse huisgemaakte pasta en ravioli vind je ook in de zijstraat van het dorpsplein richting Basiliek (3de huis rechts: pasta fresca). Maak er een simpele tomatensaus bij en met een stukje stokbrood (vraag bij de bakker “pane con sale” brood met zout) en een heerlijk glaasje wijn…
Ik hoop dat ik jullie hiermee toch nog enkele leuke of nuttige tips heb kunnen geven.
Zoals je ziet is er ontzettend veel te doen en echt geen tijd voor verveling.
Hierbij rest mij nog enkel jullie allen een ontzettend leuke vakantie toe te wensen.
